History

Jon Youngdahl is the owner of and consultant with Youngdahl Strategies, a Sacramento-based consulting company that specializes in organizational development, strategic planning and winning campaigns for their clients. Youngdahl has won numerous strategic victories in his career utilizing a philosophy built on strong grassroots organizing, member and stakeholder involvement, and a consistent belief that democratic principles can be used to create meaningful change in peoples’ lives.

Youngdahl is also a founding partner of The Majority Institute (https://majorityinstitute.com), a Denver based research and strategy hub established to understand the voters, values, issues and electoral priorities across the country. Today, TMI works with the nation’s leading progressive actors to ensure that they are armed with a comprehensive set of tools and products that turn research into action.

Prior to creating Youngdahl Strategies, he served as a Senior Advisor to the ATLAS Project, providing strategic input into the battleground-state roadmap reports of ATLAS and other key projects of the organization. Youngdahl honed his strategic skills in two decades with the labor movement, including strategic and electoral campaign work with the United Steelworkers of America, AFL-CIO and the Change to Win coalition of progressive unions. He has held four executive positions with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU): Executive Director of SEIU Minnesota and SEIU California, SEIU National Political Director under President Andrew Stern, and SEIU Chief of Staff under President Mary Kay Henry.

As a union leader, Youngdahl excelled at bringing the voices of rank-and-file union members, underserved communities and other stakeholders to the boardroom and ballot box, ensuring that decision makers are accountable to the broadest constituency possible. His three decades of campaign work have resulted in many game-changing successes including: serving as campaign manager for a top targeted state house race in Minnesota that resulted in Youngdahl’s candidate being elected the first Asian Indian in the United States to a state legislature; organizing a massive union member led turnout in the 2018 Presidential elections; and building electoral coalitions prioritizing progressive values and maximizing the involvement of working families, immigrants, women, people of color, and the LGBTQI community.

Youngdahl has also served on the boards of influential national organizations including America Votes, Ballot Initiative Strategy Center (BISC), Priorities USA Action Fund, Jobs with Justice and the National Labor State Table.

He is the father of two teenagers and is also active in school and extracurricular volunteer work.
